Today's Air Raid Shelter Maze is a remnant from the Japanese colonial era. In response to the Pearl Harbor incident, Japan expanded the war zone and excavated these air raid shelters to protect against American air raids.
The shelters extend from behind Yixian Elementary School (the former site of a Japanese shrine), along what is now the Children's Playground area, to the rear of Xinmin Junior High School and the Armed Forces Beitou Hospital. Additionally, the air raid shelters near Thermal Valley were specifically excavated to evacuate guests from hot spring inns. This story is little known to the public.
