The most eye-catching feature of the volcanic geological environment on the west side of Shamao Mountain is the valley located to the west and south of Dunxu Vocational High School. The western side is the Liuhuanggu (Sulfur Valley / Da Huang Zui) hot spring area, while the southern side is the Longfenggu (Dragon Phoenix Valley) hot spring area.
Although these two hot spring areas may look similar, they are actually quite different. First, the water on either side of the gap flows into different rivers. Second, the springs that emerge from each area are acidic carbonate springs and neutral carbonate springs respectively. The spring source of Sulfur Valley is "green sulfur" (Qinghuang). This area is where Qing Dynasty explorer Yu Yonghe came to mine sulfur. It is currently managed by the Taipei City Water Department, supplying legal hot spring hotels and residences in the Beitou and Tianmu areas. The southern Longfenggu produces white sulfur springs but lacks comprehensive legal planning, with many privately operated small hot spring establishments scattered along the trails.
